| For a membrane to be stable under different loads, it not only needs to be 3D-curved, it also needs to be pretensioned. The amount of pretension is calculated based on the expected external loading during the life-cycle of the membrane. The pretension should be high enough to have a minimum of tension in both directions under any possible load case. If the pretension is too low, the structure will be susceptible to vibrations, caused by the wind. If the pretension is calculated too high, it will result in a very heavy and expensive supporting structure with large foundations. Membrane structures Membranes – this fascinating building material appeals to the senses building upon the purest natural forms. Seeming to float weightlessly, these versatile materials can be used to create vast spans, light-flooded spaces, unique lighting effects, yet they are weather resistant, immensly strong, durable, technically advanced and economic. They can be Translucent to create a background of natural soft light Transparant to highlight interior settings with a sense of being under the open sky Shaded for a cool outside environment Acoustic to optimise an interior space Foldable or rectractable, from umbrellas to stadium roofs |
